And so it begins!

After a 10 day stretch at work, and a whirlwind pack: New camera - check!, New backpack - check!, New novel and plane tickets (Really, what more do I need? It's not like I'm climbing Kilimanjaro...) I was whisked off to the airport for my next adventure. India! It still has not sunk in.

I made my way to the gate to meet Olivia, and after a series of squeals that brought every canine running from a 10 km radius, we grabbed a drink and cheers'd to what lie ahead. Olivia pulled out her phrase book. "Look, what I got! In case we need to yell 'Thief!' in Hindi!" Now THAT is the optimism I love before a trip. I just can't wait to see Olive ask the thief to wait a sec while she pulls out her book, madly trying to find the correct page.

Our adventure began with our flight on none other than Emirates, the Sultan of all airlines. HIGHLY recommended if you've ever wanted a glimpse into the future. No kidding, the television alone brought back self-conscious memories of my first experience with a Japanese toilet. Faaaaar too many buttons to comprehend. I accidentally started my movie from the beginning about seven times, having me finally cry out, in the name of simplicity, "Is this all really NECESSARY?!!" They made up for it though. The spectrum of staff was U.N. worthy, with each and every flight attendant being from a different country. So not surprising when they announced all movies were available in... then spent the next ten minutes listing every language in existence. Even Australian!! Even Braille!!! We sat in disbelief while the lights around us dimmed to pink, then purple, then blue to simulate a sunset and eventually the stars came out and twinkled along the cabin ceiling. I'm not kidding. Every once in a while, we'd check to see what was going on outside from the camera that was attached to the tail of the plane.

We landed in the Dubai airport and our journey into the future continued. We walked around admiring the glitzy hukas and bejeweled perfume bottles, stared at flight message boards in Arabic that made Greek look easy, and were accosted by a perfume lady with a NEED to make unsespecting tourists miserable for however long it takes to get to the next shower.

Our connecting flight was just as pleasing as the first and before we knew it, we watched our plane (from the tail camera) land into Delhi. We are here!!! Let the adventure begin!

  1. I have just booked a flight for me and both kids from Dusseldorf to Dubai on Emirates (bearing in mind I will be 34 weeks pregnant, this is a grand feat in my books). I hope that those little blinking lights you are referring to keep India busy for the duration of the 8 hours.
